The template duplication does not work because the front-end controller task instead of the backend, is called when you click duplicate.

I saw this by hacking a little the joomla core files and printing some stuff ...

This is strange i did not find why.

When you click on "Duplicate" firebug-console writes http://j17/administrator/%5Bobject%20Object%5D

On the Templates list firebug console says
