Correct.
It has been showing for quite some time now and only stopped showing the field after it was saved.

is it "default" layout,
or is it a copy of it, that you also edited the HTML of "category_items.php" ?

It is a custom template. Not sure exactly which template it was cloned from, but I would suspect the default one.

I must add that the field does not show in any template it is assigned to.
I've even assigned it to a fresh clone of the default template and got the same result.

Not yet.
However, after turning on System Debug in Joomla I have noticed something interesting.
The FC system plugin is apparently trying to load the wrong field.
Instead of main_image (which is the internal name of Cover Image), it attempts to load "image", even if the field assigned to the template is main_image (as it has always been the case.

I'm now sure that the Flexisytem plugin is picking the wrong image field.

When main_image is absent from the template position, Flexisystem does not load any image field (as expected).

When I add main_image to the template position, Flexisystem attempts to render the "image" image field.
