Yes. We need to minimize UI.

It can be 3 horizontal lines icon or gear icon - but main idea is to hide text from drop down menu. If user want to see it - he need to press on icon.

indeed , we can use the pure CSS solution you provided or use bootstrap drop-down

becaue for this drop-down (and also for other small drop downs) we do not need any of the functionality of
select2 JS or choosen JS

will make the replacement
