Yes this is very much needed,

but now that i am thinking of it,
whether to make new field or enhance existing text field ?

I think better a new one (the number field) to keep it simple, clean and more intuitive.
Plus the appearance of this field as filter it will be a range (in category view and in the new advanced search view).

mmm this will require some changes to the database model handling code for both category model and search model to support ranges ... mmm
