Are you moving all the content and users into one database?
So you will have one back-end and the individual "sites" are really just different categories?

No. I have a multi-sites set up right now. All of my sites share certain tables - like the community. I am hoping to separate the databases of the sites now.

If that is the case you are then merging items.
Are there different content types in these different sites?
You are then also merging users.
Users with different access rules I would assume.

Articles/items are fairly easy to merge.
Users are also fairly easy to merge.
But I am having trouble trying to imagine doing this with all the extended data, user groups, etc.

I am not tying to merge anything that is not already together. If anything, I am copying it so that I can separate it.

The FLEXIaccess and FLEXIcontent tables are not shared.

I also do not understand how "cloning" a site fits into this.

I have 20+ sites right now, with new sites signing up regularly.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to use just the FLEXIcontent pieces of certain sites to create the new ones.

That's not a requirement, but it would be nice.

Mostly, I'd just like to know how to successfully export/import FLEXIcontent between sites.

.
So if I understand you now . . . what you want to do is clone the structure and set-up, not the content or users.

11 months ago my first post was about this same issue.
Content Kit - are Categories included?
www.flexicontent.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=128&p=577#p577
So an easy way to do this was/is on the road map.
When? Have no idea.
It is my understanding that K2 and Zoo both now have this "content kit" feature.

There has also been some mentions months ago, and a few times since then, about an Import/Export component for the content.
When? Have no idea. (first mention I saw was in Dec. 2009)

I agree 100% that getting this working would benefit all FLEXIcontent users.
But I doubt it will be easy to figure-out without the intimate knowledge and help of the core developers.

Eventually, yes.

Right now, I'd like to be able to clone everything from my live site to the new dev site.

I'm trying a full clone right now (which I have to do manually because of the multisites set-up), which I will then delete and reconstruct, to see if I can make this happen.

I'd hate to have to do this for 20 sites.

Still no luck.

I have copied all of the DB tables, the FLEXIcontent files and the cache files.

PLEASE. There has to be a way to get this content from one site to another.

Thanks for any input.
