Just a quick follow up on this. Looks like it's working now.

For the "all" section, I changed the href="#" to href="javascript:;"

I also found out from our original developer that he claims that it stopped working when he turned the Joomla builtin System cache on.

So, the question that remains, is this fix I just did going to be overwritten with a newer flexicontent release?

For better browser compatibility
href="javascript:;" is preferred to href="#"

Now about joomla cache and creating a different URL by appending the letter variable to th URL, i already explained in my previous POST ...

Yes we will include fix in the next versions of Flexicontent. There are joomla extensions available for turning off caches for specific URLs.

In our case we did not turn off / nor did bypass the cache. We forced the cache to create a separate caching for each URL of the ALPHA index. This is the preferred way for better performance while still maintaining a functional ALPHA index.

This problem with JOOMLA cache appears on forms that utilize the POST method to send the data, in contrast to the forms that use the GET method to send the data. The GET method appends the variables at the URL so it avoids the caching problem.

From SEO perspective you could worry that having different URLs could split up the Google ranking. This is not a problem if all category pages accessed by different ALPHA index letter have the same rel canonical directive. Google will know that they are the same page viewed in different ways.

We have an open issue in bug tracker to add rel canonical directive to category views too ...
