Hello

about CSS, these are not lost when upgrading,
maybe some FLEXIcontent CSS class will be changed but your CSS is not lost

Do not modify FLEXIcontent CSS files,

1. add your (item form) CSS OVERROIDES to
-- to the item form CSS parameter (in the item form TAB of component setting)

2. add your (all frontend views) CSS OVERROIDES
-- to
joomla_folder/templates/mytemplate/flexicontent.css

See more here:

Hello

- you can use the frontend customization parameters in Component setting / Item FORM TAB (you can override these in each content type)

- (developers only) use a Joomla template override for file:
components/com_flexicontent/views/item/form.php

Hello

actually they are not

-- because it is not just them:

1. you have in every field configuration you have ability to customize field behavior in item form
2. you can order your fields per content type
3. you can use groupmarker field to shape the Content Type TAB
4. Item form can use ACL for edit privilege (enable in each field)
5. You can hide fields in frontend / backend and maintain their value
6. You can have "untranslatable fields"
7. The item form includes extensive use of CSS classes to allow styling customizations
8. smart validation with inline messages for correct values and multi-inner TAB focusing
(and some further improvements in upcoming version)
(also see validation in text fields)
9. others that i forget

Limitations (which in your case, are important)
-- you can remove some CORE fields but most are needed and currently can not be removed
-- core fields positioning is fixed
-- core TAB order is fixed
