You may need a higher execution time if you had tens of thousand of articles, it still does not work on local server right?

Which PHP version do you have in you local server ??

yes that's right, i increased the value to 50 and i still get the problem, where it's only at 45 on live server.

On my local MAMP server i have 5.3.5 with max_execution_time = 50 and my live server php is 5.3.21 and max_execution_time = 45.

Have you or other user had that same issue?

actually I had some at least similar effect, which is suddenly solved:

1) I changed one of my fields to searchable.
2) After that I got the warning - which makes perfect sense.
3) Now recalculating the basic (or any other search idexes) did not fail or interrupt. It just did not seem to have any effect at all.
4) Sounds stupid but after I changed my admin-language to english (was german before), and tried again, warning is gone ?! Maybe that's not related at all, but still thought i'd share...

This is not related, the flag of dirty will be cleared even if process fails.

Does the search work properly in frontend , i mean is this field (and other searchable) included in the search ?

actually, i seem to have some issue when i enable the advanced search plugin.
I get com_content links that end up displaying wrong obviously.

And since i use FC to build a category page view but do not need to have the item view display for some category or type.
So if i manage to have the search working, and if i add content type to "Id of types, avaliable for search". Does it mean the search plugin will only search the category description or the category description plus the items but do not display them?
