No, it happens after changing thumbnails size.
And after the return of the original data, the problem disappears.

So, it's impossible to change thumbnails size without losing icons.

(similar but simpler fix they are trying to add in J3.9 content search plugin)

so the thing with search that was bugging more or less all of us will be addressed

Thumbnail re-creation is working now

But there was no bug in the image field
Somewho you got some of the items to have thumbnails owned by user ZERO

thus the web-server process had no permission to overwrite the thumbnail files

but in your case the containing folders are owned but correct user
thus it is possible to "delete" the thumbnail files before trying to recreate them

After adding code to delete the thumbnails, the new thumbnails are getting recreated ...
