now, i remember that need to test and enable (tabbed) inline edit of ALL Falang translations of an item,

this code already exists in the form / model and controller of FLEXIcontent, since it was implemented for Joomfish for J1.5 and it is a pitty not to have it as an alternative

joomfish isn't compatible with flexicontent actualy ?

Well, I have solved the issue that I could not translate JoomFish menu items ( flexicontent.org/forum/index.php ... =viewtopic ). The problem is based on the php version and the solution is described here (just in case somebody runs in the same problem): www.joomfish.net/forum/viewtopic ... 680#p39668

Anyway, after that, I started to test Joomfish and it seems to work. Joomfish in the latest version is based on the native Joomla system. That means if one translates a category Jommfish creates a new category with a new language flag and manages the association between the two categories. Same with articles or modules. So far so good. I discovered that Joomfish is not keeping the category hierarchy. Means a subcategory in German is not longer a subcategory in Englisch. Joomfish does manage this itself. If one uninstalls Joomfish he or she has to setup the hierarchy new.

A FlexiContent related issue is that I have many, many items that belong to more then one category. So I had to manually assign those articles to the "new" categories in the other language anyway.

To cut a long story short. I decided to use the native system, because it was not much more work and I am not depending on any third party language component.

But I have to admit that translating with the nativ system is a time consuming process for larger pages and the following features would be very helpful:
Joomla related
  • A full language duplication or cloning would save LOTS of time (Modules, menus, categories, articles)
  • To bind an article/category/module to another article as its translation would be great. At the moment this is only possible with menu items.
  • Display of translation status
Helpful and time saving using FC would be
  • Copying all categories including all articles and the corresponding category assignments to another language
  • Mass assignment (not copying) of articles of a category to another category, This is useful if one has articles that are the same for different languages (language=all) but belong to categories in a different language without translation too. Example, here, every logo is one single article, but I have reference lists in German and English: www.muenstermann.com/uebersicht/referenzen.html . To assign 100 articles to sometimes 6 different categories in different languages is a nightmare with the category selection system of FlexiContent... (and I have not done it, yet  )
Hope this helps! At the end it was much easier trouble and work to use the native system as I expected and now I am independent of any third party components (accept FC of course :-) ).

-- The copy task of FLEXIcontent maybe easily modified

to copy and reassign items to different categories if given a single array ... that maps original category to the copied category ...

-- so if we solve/implement category, then item copying and reassignment is rather little work
-- also massively assigning item to more categories is rather little work

Well, again, if this would be possible, 80 to 90% of the initial work for translations would just be gone!!! I am not talking about the actual translation of the articles or other items or titles. This has to be done in any way not depending on the used component.

I needed 1 day to be able to start translating anything because I had to setup the article/category (and module) structure of the page. Or in other words, to clone the page into a different language!

It is not a problem if one freshly starts with a page, but if a page is available in one page cloning of categories/articles or mass assignments of articles would be extremely helpful to have a base for the actual translation process!

Good question. Actually I don't know. The main reason I am using FC is the multi-category feature for the articles. The only field I am currently using is the image field. I though about using the related items field. Joomla 2.5 has a override feature for language strings. Perhaps this can be used?
