Field improvement: Select only year on date/time field

I have some content where an exact date is not known but the year is (sometimes the month too). For example I have a "movie" content item where the movie is announced but only the year is known. Later the full release date will be added… Is there a possibility to add the feature that you can only select a year and not have to select a month and day?

the Joomla calendar JS does not support
- year only
- year / month only

you can try to use a text field instead, enable in it, the "year" validation
then you may post feedback here about it

or maybe the solution could be not to use the calendar at all for these cases
- and instead display 1 or 2 select drop downs (year and month drop downs)

That's a good idea! But manually selecting the date like that would disable being able to filter my content on date right?
