Displaying Item counts next to category

Hello,

With Directory view, I am displaying Top category and its child categories and turn show items count on.

Top Category(0)
Sub-category A(3/0)
Sub-category B(2/0)
Sub-category C(1/0)

My requests are:

1) Instead of displaying item count for top category, it should display its sub-categories total items. But if there is no sub category then display item count.
so result should be:
Top Category(6)

2) Sub-category is displaying item counts and count of its sub-category. User won't recognize what are these numbers for. So I only want to display item count, not its sub-category count.
so result should be:
Sub-category A(3)
Sub-category B(2)
Sub-category C(1)
For this, maybe you can add param for whether to display item count only or with both item/category count.
