Both Minical module and month view template.

Using Flexi categories and custom field:
Event Begin Date and
Event finish date.

Or something in the core date field, add a bullet selection and the values available could be:
- Custom Date (Default)
- Start Date / Time
- End Date / Time

This way, we have a Date field for everyone and also the start and end for calendars.

We are thinking in using the core start and end date of publication for VIEWING purposes.

The only issue, would be to defined which date filed to use not only that but also to which menu item to link.
