Any help on formatting/positioning custom fields in template?

I would like to know how to position, format and tabulate custom fields in a template. I've tried positioning fields in the template, but that seems to have no effect when the content item with the assigned template is displayed on the front end. Documentation on the topic also seems to be lacking.

Any help or link to understandable instructions is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hello

maybe you have system page caching enabled
or you are a different the "item layout" of template other than your item is using

Cache was cleared prior to previewing and the desired template is applied in the layout.

To re-emphasize my question, apart from the positioning of fields in the template, how is other formatting achieved or applied? For example, if I wanted to tabulate

<label caption> <field>

how do I do that? Do I need to become a code and CSS fanboi?

i am a little confused,

are you trying to use a feature and it is not working ?
or you area asking how to create TABs in the frontend item view ? (not the frontend item form)
