I, too, am running all my joomlas on php 7.3 instead of php 7.4 because of above described phpthumb-error.
@micker, does the v3.3.10.zip above mean I can safely update my flexicontent installs prior to the normal update using your link?
And when will FC 3.3.10 be released regularly?

will make a new release this week

but you can go ahead to v3.3.10 there should not be any new issues with it

Changes / Fixes

• Update phpThumb to v1.7.16-202012161640 (Added support for PHP 8.0. And a couple of more fixes for support for PHP 7.3-7.4)
• Avoid reload message warning in more views (like done already e.g. for items, tags, ...)
• More intuitive behavior for filters inside slider, plus counting and coloring of active filters
• Fix path when executed via CLI and a minor code cleanup when detecting Falang being enabled
