Fatal error: Allowed memory size of ... with 20.000 items

I know that is quite a number but Im still wondering why I cant choose to display "All" items in the backend table despite I have sufficient memory:
Code:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 536870912 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 82825452 bytes) in ... libraries\joomla\environment\response.php on line 158
(this happens as well when I only try to copy 5 items)

Appart from that I am looking for a quick way to delete 10.000 items. Would that be possible by directly changing the db or is that a bad idea?

Cheers

Hello,

yes deleting items is a complex task that cannot be done by directly altering the DB,

e.g. it involves calling the cleanup method of fields:
onBeforeDeleteField()

what is best, is that we remove "all" and add:
500, 1000, 2000

for now, you can try this add :
&limit=500
or
&limit=1000
to the URL in items manager and click enter
