Create a custom ordering option

Hi all,

I'm creating a website displaying a planning of events. Until here, I managed to code a template which is "moving" items where it has to be (like past/present/future)

Now, what I'm trying to do, is to sort them by date, the one the event is starting on.
So it's a custom field, and I would like to create my own flexifield which would allow me to select this ordering option (when in admin panel/category editing). Yhen I would create the proper sql request.

The point is, which file do I have to modify ? If there is an other possibility to do that, that could avoid updating issues, I'm listening to you !
