link pdf to image

I want to use the catitem lay-out for showing images which each link to a pdf.

I've got an imagefield and a filefield.
What I actually wanted was to get the variable values and create my own link in the template: image

But I only get field->label and field->display, not a fieldvalue. Do I miss something or is their another way to create a workaround for this?
