file usage and # items - what's the difference?

Hi there,

what's the difference between backend > files > column "usage" and column "# items"?
I'm confused as although it seems "# items" is what I think it is, the use of a file in an item's file- or image-field. But what's the "Usage"-column for then?
Can I safely remove files with a zero in column "# items"?

v4.0.1 is almost ready, with 8 J4 fixes and 2 J3/J4 fixes

About assignments column , currently it is only updated manually,
-- you need to click "Maintenance" and run the "Index usage" option

then the assignments column will go to zero if no assigned items
(it will become correct for all files)

The reason the assignments column exists is because it has value for ALL files aka it is sortable
but "assigned items" column is not sortable, (it has values only for current page)

So
1. Run usage indexer
2. Sort by assignments column to find unused files
3. Delete files with zero assignments
