FLEXIcontent SVN was created by orchid1
In case anyone is not aware the FLEXIcontent SVN is now available on Google code. It was moved from the sourceforge website to improve speed.

If you have altered the flexicontent core code at all be careful. Upgrading will likely remove any edits you have done to the core code. If you have created templates they will be unharmed. SVN only updates the core. Also note that no username or password are necessary to connect to the flexicontent SVN.

The new SVN on Google Code can be found here code.google.com/p/flexicontent/source/checkout
A tutorial on how to connect to the SVN using tortoise SVN can be found here. orchid1software.com/extensions/developer...-to-flexicontent-svn

The SVN contains the latest build of FLEXIcontent, new and improved features from the standard download package.
So if you are having trouble with your installation it may be that those issues have been resolved on the SVN already.
As always be careful when installing a new version and test it out first on a testing server. You can always revert to a previous version with Subversion control but avoid the hassle and back everything up first.

Thanks a bunch for all the info!

Question: shouldn't the repository include an installation file so that an installable tarball can be built?
Find it a bit odd to overwrite the files only.
If there are some changes to the DB schema, they won't be committed.

There is actually an ant build file in your svn download directory called build.xml.

So what you need to build the installable package is:
1. install apache ant if you don't already have it
2. go to your svn directory
3. run ant -f build.xml

The above should give you the installable file com_flexicontent.tar.gz.

Good luck!
