How to enable users to add new items in the backend

I just purchased FLEXIaccess and installed it along with FLEXIcontent, and I'm struggling with what I think is the most basic thing. I want my authors to be able to log in to the backend to create their articles (items) there.

To test my settings I created an individual group assigned to my test account, and assigned it Manager permission in Joomla's control panel. I can log in to the backend just fine on the test account. I then assigned the test account permissions under the Backend & specific permissions --> FLEXIcontent global permissions. You can see the permissions in the first image:

When I log in to the test account, the New Item option is not available. See second image:

I've tried all manner of permission settings, but to no avail. I even tried writing my own rule, but without documentation on how to create rules, it did not work.
