Showing sub-category list on the item page

Need some help....

I want to show a list of all subcategories on the item page without showing the number of articles in that category. One way of doing this would be using a module but I'm wondering if it would be possible to implement this in the item.php file.

I tried coping the code from category_subcategories and pasted it into item.php but it didnt work.
