Display different code based on category

Getting close to launching a nice flexi content site.

It is a site for a large corporate real estate company.

Question.

How would i write a php statement to display different code based on the flexi content category?

thinking it would be something like this:

If category 1 then display code set 1
if category 2 then display code set 2


This is probably basic php which I am starting to get a better understanding, just not sure how to display different code based on the flexi content category.

Create 2 differents templates including your code and assign it to your category.

Template 1 with code 1 to category 1 and template 2 with code 2 to category 2.

I was hoping to find more of a "behind the scenes solution" so that the client would have to make fewer choices.

Any suggestions on displaying code based on the category?

something like

if category = 1 then display "New York"
else if category = 2 then display "Paris"
else dispaly "Sydney"
