I tried this again, but all I ever get is "Oops! Something went wrong."
Do I need a paid Google subscription for the API to work?

This is definitely the wrong answer, the function does the exact opposite of what you suggested.
It stores the map data in FC fields.

I'd like to use existing field data to create a map.

yes but address field was populate by custom field
you can hide this after
can you send me a pm with access for testing ?

FLEXIcontent is Free but involves a very big effort on our part.
Like the our support? (for a bug-free FC, despite being huge extension) Like the features? Like the ongoing development and future commitment to FLEXIcontent?

No, again, the function stores values, doesn't retrieve them.
If I use an existing field it would overwrite it, I tried it.

Is it very complicated? I just want to use already existing address data to create a map, if possible.
If its not possible yet, I'd suggest to add that feature.

Anyway, I don't get any map yet from Google.
Do I need a payed subscription?
The map service isn't shown for selection at the Google API preference page.

I'll try OpenStreetMap then ...
