the editting user must click "save" or "cancel" to check-in the field ...

NOTE: a privileged user can force a record to be checked-in , but simple edit privelege does not allow you to force a record to check-in .

To give you a short answer , goto Joomla's check-in page and select tables that you want to check-in there records

The situation is that no user is editing those fields. There are fields that indicate that a user is editing dated May 20. I have asked all users to leave the backend and still can not edit some fields.

did you check the ACL permissions (of this field) for ALL user groups that your user participates?

Also you have FLEXIcontent v2.0.2?
