Joomla v1.6+ has an option for marking articles as featured.
We have enable editing of this option in the item edit form , but if i remember correctly, we don't yet use it.

A more powerful way to have featured items is to using our ability of assigning item to multiple categories.

This way you can create categories with name "Frontpage", "Featured 1", "Featured 2", "Slideshow" , and assign your items to many categories.

Then you MUST exclude these categories from being displayed is various place (we call it exclude from routing) see more here:

We also have an idea to allow easy selection of featured categories:
